How Are Meta Search Engines Linked To Search Engine Optimisation

Meta search engines do not seem to pop up in many of the seo forums or blogs. They are a part of the search engine market place that are never touched upon, even though they make a big difference in the way a potential searcher finds results. If you are not an internet marketer or seo consultant I would even doubt if you have ever heard the phrase meta search before, however if you are serious about optimisation it is a worthwhile to have a little knowledge.

A meta search engine is a tool that does not keep it’s own personal database of information or websites and their associated keywords. A meta engine uses the search results of other search engines such as Google, Yahoo! MSN etc.. to bring forward what I call a taster of results from each one and lists them on a comprehensive search page. The effect of a meta engine is much slower results, however it can be a great advantage as well due to the wide ranging and informative information you are getting from it.

A meta engine sends a language request to lot’s of search engines and then compiles results based on the searchers keyword. As the ME covers vast amounts of information it is very effective to use for research purposes as a manual search for the same queries would take a massive amount of time, because of this it is a very effective tool for finding precise information.

Up until now I bet you assumed search engines such as Yahoo! and Google listed every single web page on the net, however this is not true. There are many factors why a web page may be indexed with Google and not Yahoo and visa versa. This is where meta engines play an interesting role as they look at all search engines picking out the most relevant results for you to view and approach many different information centres.

For search optimisation purposes it always good to see how meta engines work and to see how they bring forward results. They are not going to help you with optimising on page factors but can help you to see how your page ranks differ between search engines. Most searchers use Google and Yahoo to research topics but it is always interesting to see if a meta engine picks your page as been one of the most relevant on the net.
